HELL (Gehenna)  Name given to a section east of Jerusalem during the reign of Ahaz and Manasseh.  It is referred to as “the valley of the son of Hinnom” in Jer. 7:31, where the practice of human sacrifice at the infamous place is mentioned.  Dire predictions of future disasters to come upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem are associated with the Valley of Hinnom voiced by both Isaiah (Isa. 31:9) and Jeremiah (Jer. 19:1-9).  It is no surprise, therefore, that the NT writings employ the vivid imagery of gehinnom in speaking of the fire of hell.  Gehenna (hell) is “the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matt. 25:4).  That fire is unquenched, the consuming flame of judgment (Mark 9:42-50).  The hell of fire awaits the unrighteous who show no concern for the righteousness of God.
